✠ TITHING – ABOUT
Tithing provides for essential financial needs for the work of a friary and for financially needy members. (Example: Jesus the Good Shepherd)
Members of a third order and our lay members are part of our fraternity and are typically encouraged to prioritize tithing to their local friary, as it is the foundation of their spiritual life.
In the Bible, the three different types are as follows:
1. The Levitical, or sacred tithe (Num. 18: 21, 24).
2. The tithe of the feasts (Deut. 14:22-27).
3. The tithe for the poor (Deut. 14:28, 29).
✠ For an EMMI member of a third-order ministry (Franciscan or Benedictine), tithing typically emphasizes intentional stewardship, blending traditional financial giving with the donation of time and talent to a friary and to the poor. While 10% of income is a common guideline, many focus on generous stewardship tailored to personal capacity.
✠ Key Aspects of Third Order Tithing:
- Definition: 10% of one’s increase (income) to support the ministry’s work
- If financial income is low, members often substitute 3% to 10% of their time/talent (volunteering) to make up the shortfall in the tithe.
