Today, day nine, is the end of “Holy Week”

Structure of the Octave (November 1 to November 8)

November 8 (The Octave Day): The Octave Day of All Saints, the traditional conclusion (“eighth day”) of the octave, wrapping up the solemn week of prayer and remembrance before the liturgical calendar moves forward.

November 8 focused on the Cost of Discipleship: The proper texts for the Octave Day shifted entirely to martyrdom and suffering. The Introit explicitly called upon God to remember the blood of His saints, and the scriptural readings from Hebrews listed the gruesome physical trials, imprisonments, and tortures endured by those who refused to abandon the faith. It served as a grounded, gritty theological bookend to the week’s celebration.

The Octave Day (Nov 8) Double / Greater Double. The solemnity surged back for a grand finale. The full “doubled” antiphons returned, and the liturgy featured entirely distinct, heavy-hitting proper texts rather than repeating the opening day.

The Liturgical Layering (Commemorations)

  • The Primary Mass Text: If a major saint’s feast fell during the week, the priest wore the red colour and said a specific Mass for martyr saints
  • The Layered Prayers: To keep the octave alive, the priest layers the Collect (opening prayer), Secret, and Postcommunion prayers of All Saints into the Mass immediately after the saints’ prayers.
