✠ The Sanctuary (Overview)

The sanctuary is the most sacred area of the chapel, the place where heaven touches earth in the liturgy. It is usually elevated to distinguish it from the nave and draws the eye toward the mystery of the altar.
It contains the principal furnishings used in worship, each with a precise role.
🕊️ 1. Principal Liturgical Furnishings (Core)
These are the essential elements of the sanctuary:

- Altar → The center of sacrifice and Eucharistic presence (Top of the page picture)
- Pulpit → Where the Word of God is proclaimed
- Lectern → Used for readings, announcements, or instruction
- Tabernacle (if present in sanctuary) → Reserved Blessed Sacrament

The tabernacle and votive candles
✝️ 2. Sacramental & Ritual Furniture

These support the celebration of the sacraments:
- Credence Table → Holds chalice, paten, cruets
- Incense burner
🔔 3. Sanctuary Accessories & Sacred Signs

These deepen the sense of the sacred:
- Altar Candles → Honour and solemnity
- Crucifix → Central visual theology of sacrifice
- Sanctuary Lamp → Indicates the Real Presence
- Missal Stand / Book Rest
- Altar Cloths & Paraments
👉 These are not “decorations”—they are signs that teach.
The sanctuary is the heart of the chapel, set apart, elevated, and ordered toward the Holy Sacrifice. Here stand the altar, the place of offering; the ambo, the voice of the Word; and the sacred furnishings that serve the mysteries of God. Every element, from candle to crucifix, speaks silently of heaven made present among us.
