Position Description

Job Title: Lay Minister

Reports To: The Bishop

Position Status: Full-Time Online

Purpose:

The role of the Lay Minister is to assist the Bishop in overseeing the life and direction of the EMMI. The Lay Minister will have a firm grasp of the EMMI’s purpose, values, and strategy, and the ability to align ordained and lay staff, as well as key leadership teams, with its mission. The Lay Minister will offer Lay Ministerial leadership to the congregation alongside clergy. The Lay Minister will ensure that the systems, practices, and policies of the EMMI Ministry support its ministry activities responsibly and effectively.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Preaching and teaching: The Lay Minister will be the primary preacher for worship services. The Lay Minister will also provide leadership in planning and executing Adult Education programs and other discipleship and ministry training programs, in coordination with other ordained and lay leaders.
  2. Strategic leadership and planning: The Lay Minister is responsible for strategic planning and staff coordination to advance the EMMI’s purpose. The Lay Minister will define strategic goals and vision as a key leader among staff and elders, and implement the plan by:
    1. Coordinating/leading weekly staff meetings and other activities to clarify and execute goals and objectives.
    2. Monitoring the spiritual pulse of the congregation through review and accountability.
    3. Ensuring staffing, facilities and programs are effectively aligned to meet strategic goals.
  3. Staff supervision and development: The Lay Minister serves as director to ordained and lay staff and lay volunteers, and leads, evaluates, and mentors existing staff in their respective areas of ministry by:
    1. Overseeing staff training and development.
    2. Hiring and dismissing staff and prioritizing staff additions after consultation and guidance from the Bishop.
    3. Providing leadership to the Lay Ministerial staff in the design and implementation of all ministries.
    4. Working with the Personnel Team to implement reviews and recommendations.
    5. Maintaining efficient, effective lines of communication between staff and the Boards.
    6. Serving as HR manager, conduct performance evaluations, and provide ongoing informal performance feedback.
  1. Administration: The Lay Minister oversees and executes the administration through appropriate staff and lay leadership teams, and ensures the completion of ministry, business, facility, and logistical support functions through staff and lay volunteers. He must:
    1. Oversee the Lay Ministerial care needs of the congregation and, as necessary, share with other ordained and lay ministers in hospital visitation, home visits, counselling, marriages and funerals.
    2. Supervise the Office Manager and provide direction as needed to ensure the effective operation of front-office support functions.
    3. Oversee the development of and adherence to EMMI policies and procedures.
  1. Evaluation and compensation: The Lay Minister will file monthly reports to the Elders on ministry accomplishments and activities. The Personnel Team will conduct annually a performance evaluation and review of the compensation package.

Note that all jobs at EMMI are volunteer-only; none of the staff, including the Archbishop, receives any pay or stipend. We work for the glory of God.
